Worship of Lord Murugan is conducted with great reverence in countries around the world. In countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Australia, Mauritius, England, America, Switzerland, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and Indonesia, it is observed as a unique form of worship. The Holy Temple Palani was given the name Pothini and Pazhanam during the Sangam period. The references in Thirumurugatrupadai as Tiruvaavinan-Kudi, and in Agananuru, as ‘Muzhuvuruzhi Thinitoneadu Velvai, Ponnudai Nedunagar Pothini’ (61), ‘Murukanalpore Nedu Velavi, Yarukoti Yanap Potini Yangan’ (1) are noteworthy. A reference to this place is also found in Silappadikaram as Velavikko Malikal Kaatti (Silambu 28-198).
